Investigation Launched Into Call Centre Fraud Allegation

An employee of a major call centre is being investigated following allegations of illegally obtaining credit card details.

The employee worked for a company handling property tax applications on behalf the Revenue Commissioners and was asking people for their card details when they called in to discuss property tax applications.

It is understood that the call centre staff had no reason to ask for this information.

The Irish Independent have reported that the person was reported after an employee from the Revenue Commissioners, who had phoned the call centre to discuss their own property tax, was surprised to be asked for card details.

However, the Revenue Commissioners have said that no cardholder suffered any financial loss.

It is thought that the employee under investigation was collecting the card details in order to sell them to criminals.
