Former FF Senator Charged With Demanding Money With Menaces

A former Fianna Fáil senator and two other men have appeared in court charged with demanding money with menaces.

Ex-senator, 70-year-old Francis O'Brien, Michael Marron, 56, and Raymond McCaughey, 55, appeared at Carrickmacross District Court in connection with a demand for €100,000.

Mr O'Brien, 70, of Corwillan, latton, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, was remanded on bail of €5,000 cash to appear again on 22 May.

Marron, from Taghart, Shercock, Cavan and McCaughey from Drumgannus, Broomfield, Co Monaghan, were also granted bail.

All three face a single charge that on 27 April, 2012 at Tullyvaragh Lower, Carrickmacross they demanded €100,000 from Michael Heelan with menaces contrary to the Criminal Justice Public Order Act.

PSNI Investigating Fatal Collision Near Bready, Co Tyrone
An investigation has been launched following a fatal road traffic collision near Bready, Co Tyrone. At around 1.40pm on Sunday, 07 April, police responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on the Victoria Road. Taxi Protestors Hail Regulator
Dublin taxi drivers are today staging protests urging a clamp-down of the issuing of taxi licences. The drivers are making their voices known at Dublin Airport, at the Dail and at the office of the Taxi Regulator in Dublin as part of the campaign. Hundreds of taxi drivers are protesting outside the Regulators' premises demanding change.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson And Wife Appear In Court
Former DUP Leader, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, have appeared before Newry Magistrates Court charged with a number of historical sex offences. Donaldson, 61, is facing a total of 11 charges, including one charge of rape, one of gross indecency involving a child and nine charges of indecent assault.

On-Duty Firefighter Arrested On Suspicion Of Drink Driving
A fireman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving while on duty behind the wheel of a fire engine. The man was driving a fire truck on the Callan Road, Kilkenny over the weekend and approached a checkpoint. It is believed he was returning from an emergency incident and failed a breath test. He was issued a fixed charged penalty notice.

A survey by the National Consumer Council (NCC) has shown the disparity between the Republic's prices and that of the North is steadily growing, prompting shoppers to cross the border for their groceries.
