McKevitt Loses Real IRA Conviction
Michael McKevitt, the first person in the history of the State to be jailed for directing terrorist activities, has lost his appeal against his conviction.
Jailed in 2003, 63-year-old McKevitt appeard before the Circuit Criminal Court in an attempt to have his conviction declared a miscarriage of justice.
However, Mr Justice John MacMenamin, presiding, sitting with Mr Justice and Mr Justice dismissed his action.
Giving the court’s decision, Mr Justice McMenamin said the court was acceding to the State's application to strike out the matter because McKevitt's application, under Section 2 of the Criminal Procedure Act was "unstateable and unarguable."
