Former Christian Brother Found Guilty Of Sexual Abuse

A former Christian Brother has been found guilty at Galway Crown Court on six charges of indecent assault.

A jury returned a unanimous verdict on six counts for the sexual abuse of a young boy at St Joseph's Industrial School in Letterfrack during the 1960s.

The trial heard that the victim had been sentenced to four years detention in Letterfrack when he was nine-years-old over the theft of a bicycle.

The 59-year-old man told the court how despite returning the bicycle to his local garda station later the same day, he was charged with its theft.

Describing himself as the smallest boy in Letterfrack for many years the man said he was there for two years when his abuser arrived.

From then he was abused two to three times every week until he left the institution in April 1967.

The court heard that the Christian Brother nicknamed him "Tuppence" after telling him he was not worth tuppence.
