VAT Reduced For Tourism Services Ahead Of St Paddy's Day Festival
A €50m cash injection for Dublin has been announced ahead of the weekends St Patrick’s Festival, which is expected to attract more than 120,000 tourists to the city.
It is thought that in total, some 800,000 people will take part in the celebrations, which start tomorrow and run until Monday.
“The St Patrick’s Festival is Dublin’s flagship annual event and it looks like this year could be the biggest yet,” said Dublin Chamber of Commerce chief executive Gina Quin.
The money come via a reduced rate of VAT for tourism services.
“The decision to extend the lower rate of VAT at 9pc was particularly important, however, a commitment must be made to extend the application of the rate into 2014,” Ms Quinn said.
“One third of all hotel beds are booked one year in advance, so providing a level of certainty on the VAT rate will allow the tourism industry to market this competitive advantage throughout 2013 in selling tourism products for 2014.”

SF Proposals On Tourism Are "Reckless And Irresponsible" - Troy
Sinn Féin's proposals for tourism in its alternative Budget 2017 are "reckless and irresponsible", according to Fianna Fáil's Spokesperson on Tourism, Robert Troy. Deputy Troy said plans by the party to increase the VAT rate on hotel beds are "dangerous" due to the "fragile state" of Ireland's tourism industry.
