High Court Order Removal Or Road Laid Without Permission
The director of a waste management company and his wife have been ordered to remove a 1.6km road built from waste material, without planning permission, in a Special Area of Conservation.
At the High Court Mr Justice John Hedigan made the orders against Seán Doyle, a director of Oxigen Environmental Ltd, and his wife Mary Doyle, concerning a road made from waste material from one of the firm’s facilities, built on lands owned by the couple at Portree and Ballymanus, near Vicarstown, Portlaoise.
Laois County Council sought the orders after arguing the roadway was an unauthorised development built on part of the Nore-Barrow SAC and posed a risk to the environment.

Ireland Must Generate Less Waste
Efforts to recycle are being undermined by the increasing amount of waste we produce, according to the Minister of State. Speaking at the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the Minister of State Tony Killeen said: “We should recycle and recover all our waste – but we must generate less waste to recycle”.

PSNI Investigating Fatal Collision Near Bready, Co Tyrone
An investigation has been launched following a fatal road traffic collision near Bready, Co Tyrone. At around 1.40pm on Sunday, 07 April, police responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on the Victoria Road. When police arrived it was discovered that a white Seat Leon had left the carriageway close to the junction with Grangefoyle Road.

Maximum per kg rates for household waste collection should be introduced, Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, has said. "I have been contacted by many constituents who are very concerned that some waste companies are imposing huge rises in bin charges," Deputy Fitzpatrick.
