Woman To Face Trial Over Husbands Death 25 Years Ago

A 59-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the death of her husband 25 years ago.

Philomena Coton, was yesterday served with a book of evidence and sent forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court.

Father-of-two Christopher Payne, who was aged 38, was attacked at his home, at Rutland Grove, Crumlin, on May 13, 1988, by a group of men armed with a hatchet.

Mr Payne, who suffered from a chronic kidney ailment, was treated in hospital for serious head injuries but never recovered and died six months later.

Mrs Coton, who had been living in Coventry until last January when she was extradited, is the second person to face charges following a review of the investigation by the garda cold case unit.

The Dublin man accused of killing his partner while on holiday in Spain has confessed to the murder at a Spanish court. The prosecution are seeking a 20-year sentence for the killing, which occurred three years ago in their holiday home near Alicante three years ago.

325 Million Year-Old Amphibian Bones Found In Clare
The bones of an amphibian-like creature that scurried the shores of Co Clare 325 million years ago have been discovered. The two small fossilised bones were recovered from a beach at Doolin. Researchers Dr Eamon Doyle and Dr Aodhán Ó Gogáin published their findings in the Irish Journal of Earth Sciences.
