Fianna Fáil Accused Of 'Trying To Undermine' New Hospital

Fianna Fáil have been accused of "trying to undermine" a new facility at St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny, according to Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.

His comments come after controversy surrounding the fast tacking of hospital projects in Kilkenny and Wexford by Health Minister James Reilly.

The fast tracking of the hospital projects in the constituencies of two senior Cabinet ministers, was revealed yesterday by RTÉ’s This Week programme.

Documents show Mr Reilly told the HSE to accelerate the projects at Wexford General Hospital and St Luke's in Kilkenny.

They also showed that ministers Brendan Howlin and Mr Hogan made announcements about the work before the HSE Board became aware of the change.

Mr Hogan accused Fianna Fáil of trying to undermine the Kilkenny development, which was going ahead after the HSE identified savings and efficiencies to pay for it.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Ruairi Quinn told reporters that Mr Reilly will update the Cabinet tomorrow on the details so his colleagues can see "exactly what happened".
