Report Called For On Unused Train Carriages Worth €44m
Train carriages worth €44m owned by Irish Rail sit idle at any one time, it has been revealed.
The Public Accounts Committee has asked National Transport Authority to produce a report as to why the trains are going unused.
The news has lead TD’s to question why the company does not sell off the unused stock, particularly in light of the operators ongoing financial problems.
Irish Rail received a €36m bailout from the government last year and raised fares across its service.
Amid accusations that Irish Rail has over-purchased, an Irish Rail spokesman defended the extra carriages saying they allowed for maintenance and additional capacity during busy travel periods.
