€24,000 Compensation For Credit Union Employee Over Homophobic Remarks

A credit union employee called “a queer” and mocked for his “camp” accent has been awarded €24,000 by the Equality Tribunal.

The man, who worked as an office administrator, alleged that he was subjected to comments about his sexuality and dress style, and accusations that he was having a homosexual relationship with a colleague.

The tribunal was told that he overheard conversations between board members in which one man asked if he was gay, which was followed by laughter.

He claims the man said: "I had better not be left alone in a room with him. I hope it's not contagious."

The credit union however denied that it had treated him badly because of his sexuality, or that there was a homophobic atmosphere in the office.

Colleagues also denied they made discriminatory comments.

An equality officer found that the credit union discriminated against the man.

He was awarded €8,000 in respect of the discrimination, and €16,000 in respect of the victimisation he suffered.
