Serial Rapists Walks Free Pending Appeal

A man has been granted bail and walked free from jail after pleading guilty to 16 charges of rape and indecent assault against his daughter.

72-year-old Patrick O’Brien admitted admitted sexually abusing his daughter at least once a week for ten years and was sentenced to three years in prison, however the judge granted him bail pending an appeal, and he walked free.

O’Brien’s daughter Fiona Doyle said the abuse was as frequent as having dinner.

Saying it was one of the worst cases of abuse once could possibly find, Mr Justice Paul Carney added that he had to consider the health position of the accused, RTÉ has reported.

The judge went to say that if he imposed a severe custodial sentence and supended it, it would go out to the community in soundbites that in one of the most serious cases of serial rape of a daughter, the accused walked.

O'Brien was sentenced to 12 years in prison, but suspended the final nine and granted him continuing bail pending an appeal.
