'Summer Scorcher' Prediction Branded 'Ridiculous'
An optimistic weather forecast, which predicted Ireland was in line for “summer scorcher” has been branded as “ridiculous” by Met Éireann.
New Zealander Ken Ring claims he can make accurate long-term forecasts by gauging moon, sun and tidal activity.
Mr Ring, who claims to have predicted Ireland’s abnormally cold winter of 2010/11 months in advance, has forecast that Ireland is in line for the hottest summer since 1995.
While his prediction that Ireland will be wet this spring is easily accepted, his claims that the country will enjoy three largely dry months in June, July and August were warmly welcomed.
He claimed temperatures will top a tropical 30 degrees over the summer, with possible drought conditions in August, while we could be in store for a sun-drenched September.
However, Met Éireann’s Harm Luijks poured cold water on the predictions. “It is ridiculous. Science does not allow us to forecast more than two weeks in advance. That has not changed and it is not going to change,” he said
He told The Irish Times that long-term predictions rarely stand up to scrutiny. “When people like Mr Ring get it wrong you never hear from them but when they get it right they shout it from the rooftops,” he said.
He said such predictions would keep coming and if they said anything out of the ordinary, they would always get some attention. “Everyone wants to have a nice summer and it could certainly happen, but such predictions are still ridiculous.”

Weather Warnings Continue
Strong winds, heavy rain and further flooding are predicted as Met Éireann issues a further weather warning. A status yellow warning for rain came into effect nationwide at 6am on Friday morning. Rainfall of between 30-45mm is predicted in the next 24 hours.

Government Launch Economic Growth Plan
Unemployment in Ireland will not fall below 10% before 2018, the government's new economic plan has said. The newly published Strategy for Growth has predicted an unemployment rate of 8.1% by the year 2020. The document also lays out predictions for economic growth, saying that by next year it will reach 2%, then 2.3% in 2015 and 3.0% in 2020.

Inflation Lowest In Over 70 Years
The rate of inflation is now running in negative numbers, and in a state of deflation at 2.6%, a level not seen since 1933. The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show consumer prices fell by 2.6% in March, the third month of price falls in a row. The fall means prices of goods and services are now at the same level as August 2007.
