Former Judge Sentenced To Two And A Half Years
A former judge has been jailed for two and a half years after being convicted of deception.
Heather Perrin, from Lambay Court in Malahide, resigned from her position on Monday after she deceived a man into leaving half of his estate to her children.
Perrin, 61, was working at Thomas Davis's solicitors at the time of the offence in 2009.
The court had been told that Mr Davis intended to leave €2,000 to each of Perrin's adult children.
But the false will, which he was unaware of, was exposed after Perrin’s elevation to the District Court in February 2009.
Perrin and Davis were close friends when she worked as a solicitor.
Judge Mary Ellen Ring described it as "one of the most serious breaches of trust" to come before the courts.
Perrin broke down in tears as she was given her sentence.
Minister Shatter said: "It is of the utmost importance that a client can trust a solicitor acting on his or her behalf to properly implement his or her instructions. Members of the legal profession are in a particular position of trust and to ensure confidence in the profession all solicitors must honestly implement instructions received and at all times act in an appropriate manner. This obligation of course also attaches to any member of the legal profession who aspires to hold judicial office. The conviction last week of Heather Perrin in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and her sentencing today starkly illustrates the importance of the highest standards of honesty being observed. The victims in this case are to be greatly commended for their fortitude in seeing this difficult and distressing criminal prosecution through to conviction."
