No Pay Cut For Consultants Earning £100,000+
Consultants earning salaries of more than €100,000 will not face pay cuts in the new Croke Park deal because it would "destroy" the public health service.
Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin ruled out the move as he discussed his plans to get an extra €1bn in savings from the public pay bill over the next three years.
He said cutting the pay of consultants would make it harder to retain medics of the "highest calibre" in the public health system. He said it would lead to the departure of consultants from the public sector.
Mr Howlin told the Oireachtas Finance Committee that consultants were the biggest single group of public servants earning over €100,000.

300 Companies Gone Bust Since New Year
The economic turmoil has hit Ireland's private sector hard as the number of companies going bust has gone up by 76% for the first half of this year. More than 300 companies have been wound up, a 76% increase on last year's figures with most of the failing companies being in the construction and engineering sector.

Union 'Says No' To Public Service Pay Cut
Ireland's biggest public service union has slammed any speculation that it is accepting a pay cut for its workers. Impact has told its 55,000 members there will be no negotiation with the Government over pay cuts, and "did not have, would not get, and will not seek" a mandate for pay cuts from his members.
