Student Leader Arrested After Dail Protest

THE president of the country's national student union body was arrested last night following a demonstration in the Dail.

About 100 Union of Students in Ireland (USI) members were in the Dail visitors' gallery during a debate on college fees and grants.

When the vote on a Fianna Fail motion was defeated, the USI representatives stood up and turned their backs on Government TDs.

USI president John Logue was arrested by a garda and led away in handcuffs after he was repeatedly asked to sit down and he refused, according to a USI spokesman.

Last night, several colleagues of Mr Logue's from the USI and the Trinity College students' union attended Pearse Street garda station awaiting Mr Logue's release.
