Ó Cuív To Deliver Oration At Donnacha de Barra Commemoration

The annual Donnacha de Barra Commemoration will take place on Sunday 18th November in Riverstick, Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture Eamon Ó Cuív TD will deliver the oration.

Born in Cullen, Riverstick, in July 1883, Donnacha De Barra first came to prominence for his athletic talents. A member of the famous Blackrock Hurling team that won four consecutive Senior Cork County titles from 1910-1913, the Ballymartle native also won a Junior County medal with Lees in 1910 as well as featuring in the 1912 in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final with Cork.

Local Fianna Fáil Cllr Alan Coleman said: "Donnacha was an active member of both the volunteer and trade union movements, he was arrested for his activities in 1916 and upon his release, he was appointed to the Republican police in Cork City.

"Donnacha was later imprisoned in Hare Park Internment Camp, Co Kildare, where he joined a hunger strike to protest against the continuing imprisonment of Republican Prisoners, despite the cessation of hostilities. He died as a result of his protest on the 20th of November and Donnacha's remains returned to Cork where they were left to the then TD David Kent. Mary MacSwiney conducted his funeral services.

"Laid to rest in St Finbarr's Cemetery, Donnacha was buried next to Tómas McCurtain and Terence MacSwiney. It will be a great pleasure to welcome Deputy Ó Cuív to Cork for the commemoration as we remember a great patriot and Irishman,” concluded Cllr Coleman."

Deputy Ó Cuív will deliver the oration after 11.30am mass in Riverstick.
