New 'Anti-Superbug' Unit Opens At Ennis General
Ireland’s first 100 per cent “Sari-compliant” medical facility has been open following he completion of a new €15m wing of Ennis General Hospital.
Sari, a new standard, stands for strategy for the control of antimicrobial resistance in Ireland, and follows concerns in recent years over hospital “superbugs” such as MRSA and C difficile.
Hospital manager Frank Keane confirmed the first patient to be transferred to the new unit was James Carmody from Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare.
Mr Keane said: “It’s a great day for Ennis General Hospital that we have commenced the phased transfer of patients into the new unit. It is great for the county, for the patients and the future of the hospital, and has only happened as a result of the absolute dedication of staff at all levels to the future of Ennis General.”
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) had previously expressed concerns over staffing levels, but members had now expressed satisfaction that most of these issues had been resolved.
INMO industrial relations officer Mary Fogarty said yesterday: “The INMO is satisfied that the HSE has agreed to revise the staffing arrangements for the new wards to enable the transfer of patients and staff to this first-class, modern healthcare facility.”

100 New Jobs Announced In Ennis
One hundred new jobs are to be created by specialist healthcare recruitment firm TTM Healthcare, as part of a €5m investment. The jobs will be created over the next three years with the majority being based at the firm's Ennis headquarters. However, some staff will also be sought in Dublin and Cork.

Quarter Of HSE Backroom Staff Face Redundancy
A quarter of all Health Service Executive backroom staff are now facing redundancy following an announcement from the Health Service's Chief Executive. Brendan Drumm, the HSE boss, made the announcement on the RTÉ Marian Finucane programme, where he said about 25% of the total backroom staff faced redundancy within the next year.

The spectre of cancer misdiagnosis in women has again come back to haunt the Irish government. The Health Service Executive (HSE) has today been meeting cancer support groups to brief them about a new initiative for women concerned about cancer following fresh revelations over a third suspected misdiagnosis at Ennis General Hospital.

€6.5m To Be Spent On New Off-Road Cycle Route
A total of €6.5m is to be spent on the development of three new off-road cycling routes in Co Kerry, Galway and Waterford. The development will see the former Great Southern Railway line on the Ring of Kerry converted into a 26km cycleway between Glenbeigh and Renard.
