5,000 Gather To Welcome Home Olympic Athletes

Some 5,000 people gathered in Dublin city centre this afternoon to welcome home the athletes of Team Ireland.

31 athletes took part in the ceremony outside the Mansion House, around half of the full Irish Olympic squad, including the five medal winners.

Event organisers had hoped for 20,000 people to attend, with the bad weather was blamed for a lower turnout.

A government reception for the team was also held at Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park, Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

The athletes also visited European Union House before the event on Dawson Street.
