Independent Senator Defends 'Double Jobbing'

Independent senator Fiach Mac Conghail has defended his "double jobbing" as director of Abbey Theatre, saying that he donates his Seanad salary of €65,000 to the arts.

It is alleged that almost half of the 60 senators have a second job, and that some of them have poor attendance records.

It is known that Mr Mac Conghail missed 10 out of the 61 Seanad days in the first half of this year.

In a statement Mac Conghail said he donated 60% of his Seanad salary to the Abbey Theatre, and the remaining 40% to other arts projects, arts research and the National Campaign for the Arts lobby group, which he is a member of.

The senator went on to claim that he "does not personally gain" from the €23,000 leader's allowance, which is given to Independent senators, and donates it to arts projects and charities.

A spokeswoman said Mr Mac Conghail would be publishing a full list of all the projects and groups he had funded at the end of his Seanad term in 2016.

The spokeswoman said Mr Mac Conghail had tried to introduce an amendment to legislation earlier this year so that every Independent TD and senator would have to show what they spent their leader's allowance on.
