Mystery Blaze At Merrion Inn
The owner of well-known pub, the Merrion Inn, which was gutted by fire early yesterday, has said he is unsure of its exact cause.
Proprietor of the bar on south Dublin's Merrion Road, Eamonn McCormack, said that the blaze began at a back section of the establishment where bins are stored but was unsure of exactly how it started.
Five units of Dublin Fire Brigade fought the blaze, which broke out at around 4am yesterday and is thought to have started in a box compactor.
It led to extensive fire damage on the first floor of the two-storey building after spreading from a back kitchen area.
The ground floor suffered substantial water damage.
Mr McCormack, whose family has run the popular establishment for the last 21 years, said he was alerted to the fire after the alarm went off.
"I got a call at 4am from our security company saying the alarm was going off," he said outside the premises yesterday.
"I came down just as the fire brigade were about to break the windows and I let them in."
The blaze took place next door to a petrol station although it is understood that there was no threat of it spreading towards fuel supplies.

Investigation Follows Dublin Blazes
Gardaí have launched an investigation following a series of fires in Dublin yesterday evening. The suspicious blazes led Dublin Fire Brigade to attend three separate incidents in the Darndale area in the northside of the city within just over an hour. The first fire began at three unoccupied houses in the Buttercup Park estate at about 9.10pm.

Six Fire Crews Tackle Second Howth Hill Gorse Fire
Six Dublin Fire Brigade units tackled a gorse fire on Howth Hill on Monday night. The emergency services were called to the scene at around 22:00 last night. It is the second gorse fire in the area in a week. The first fire is believed to have been started deliberately, but the cause of last nights blaze is unknown.

Halloween Fire Safety Campaign Launched
Dublin Fire Brigade's Halloween Safety Campaign, 'Be Safe Been Seen' has been launched at Dublin Fire HQ by tArdmhéara Críona Ní Dhálaigh. The Fire Brigade will work with Dublin Bus, An Garda Siochana and the DSPCA in an effort to inform young people about the dangers of illegal bonfires and fireworks.
