Heated Exchanges At Today's Smithwick Tribunal
There was a sharp exchange between a key witness, his legal team and Judge Smithwick over the questioning of the witness, during todays Smithwick Tribunal.
Former detective garda sergeant Owen Corrigan, who is central to the Tribunal, objected to questions about his finances being raised in public this morning and condemned the manner in which he was being questioned.
His counsel, Jim O'Callaghan, said counsel for the Tribunal, Justin Dillon, was "bordering towards unlawfulness" in his questions given decisions by the High and Supreme Courts relating to other Tribunals.
However, Judge Peter Smithwick dismissed the issue.
Referring to previous comments by Mr Corrigan, the Judge said he was sure the witness would prefer if this Tribunal "would devote itself to his heroism and him being the crown jewel in the detective force in Ireland but there are hard questions that have to be asked and Mr Corrigan will have to answer them."
Mr Corrigan is one of three former gardaí being investigated by the Tribunal to see if they passed information to the IRA which led to the murders of Chief Supt. Harry Breen and Supt. Bob Buchanan in March 1989, just minutes after leaving a meeting in Dundalk Garda Station.
The witness, along with retired Sgt. Leo Colton and Finbarr Hickey, have all denied the allegations of collusion.

Govt Urged To Remove The Threat Of Workplace Tribunal Fees
SIPTU has called on the Government to remove the threat of workplace tribunal fees. Following a landmark ruling in the UK, which found that these charges mitigate against workers bringing such cases, the Government has been urged to amend legislation in order to remove the possibility of a minister introducing workplace tribunal fees.

Gardaí Collusion Found In Smithwick Tribunal
The Smithwick tribunal has found that gardaí tipped off the Provisional IRA in the murder of two of the most senior RUC officers to die during the Troubles. RUC Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan were shot by the IRA after a meeting at Dundalk Garda Station in 1989.

The Chairman of the Smithwick Tribunal is due make an opening statement later today. Set up in 2005, the tribunal investigated allegations of garda and state collusion in the 1989 IRA murders of two RUC officers. Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Robert Buchanan were ambushed near the village of Jonesboro in County Armagh.
