Miss Ireland Máire Hughes Stripped Of Title

Miss Ireland, Máire Hughes, was yesterday stripped of her title.

Newly crowned Hughes, who is the current Miss Mayo, was found to be too old. The cut-off age for entering the competition is 24, she will be 26 on her next birthday.

Rebecca Maguire, from Belfast, who was placed as Runner-up on Sunday's final, has now been named as the new Miss Ireland.

Máire Hughes had listed her age as 21.

Miss Ireland organiser Sean Montague said: "Unfortunately, Ms Hughes did not meet the age criteria," he said. "It was with much regret that we had to inform her of our decision. We are all very fond of Máire and wish her all the best in the future. She is a beautiful girl and both inside and out and we have no doubt that she will have a great career ahead of herself."

Rebecca Maguire will represent the Ireland at the Miss World finals in Inner Mongolia on August 18.
