Record Settlement In Fr Kelly Abuse Case

A record settlement has been reached in the sexual abuse case brought against Fr Michael Kelly and his diocese in California.

A jury had found Tipperary native, Fr Kelly, guilty of abusing a man now in his 30’s, in the late 1980’s. However it was discovered the day before Fr Kelly was due to give evidence to the court that he had left the US and flown back to Ireland.

In his absence the diocese of Stockton in California agreed a settlement of $3.75m (€2.83m), believed to be one of the largest ever paid in the US.

Fr Kelly continued to insist he was innocent despite leaving the country and refusing to return to give his evidence.

He is believed to be with family in Tipperary.
