Man Jailed For Blackmailing Former Councillor

A man from Dublin who blackmailed a former Fianna Fáil councillor using photos of him supposedly taking cocaine has been jailed for 18 months.

Wesley Higgins from Kilmore, Coolock, tried to extort €5,000 from Liam Kelly by threatening to give pictures from a party to a newspaper in August 2006.

Higgns sent the photos to the newspaper after failing to blackmail Mr Kelly.

He pleaded guilty to demanding money with menaces.

Mr Kelly said he cannot remember parts of the party as he suffers from blackouts caused by his alcoholism.
