Rabbitte Denies TV Tax Is Additional

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte has said the plans for the broadcasting chargewould not be an additional tax if introduced.

Under the plans proposed by the minister, the broadcasting charge would replace the current television licence, which requires any household in possession of a TV to pay an annual fee of €160.

Announcing the plans on Wednesday, the minister said Ireland's broadcasters were losing out on some €25 million per annum through ducked charges.

The minister said a new system is being considered due to technological changes, which has seen an increasing number of people use "non-traditional" means to access RTÉ's content.
