Taoiseach Offers Condolences For Aengus Fanning

The Taoiseach has expressed his sadness on learning of the death of Aengus Fanning, Editor of the Sunday Independent newspaper.

Speaking on Tuesday, Enda Kenny said described Aengus as a charismatic and significant media figure who took a very hands on approach to his job as Editor of the Sunday Independent.

"Throughout his 28 year tenure as Editor of the paper, he ensured that the Sunday Independent remained relevant and influential on the important news stories of the day.

"I want to pass on my condolences to his wife Anne and his sons and wider family and friends and to all his colleagues at Independent Newspapers."

SIPTU Condemns Call To Reduce Qualification Requirements For Childcare Providers
SIPTU has condemned a call by a new independent childcare providers' organisation, 'Seas Suas', for a temporary derogation that would allow up to 25% of staff in Early Years facilities to work without any qualifications. 'Seas Suas' has said that only 75% of staff employed in the sector should require a basic childcare qualification.

Missing Teen Found Safe And Well
A teenager missing from the Dublin area has been found safe and well, Gardaí have confirmed. Concerns for the welfare of Lacramioara Gabriela Argint, aged 15, were raised on Sunday after she was last seen on Talbot Street a day earlier. Gardaí now say the teen has been found safe and well, with no further action required.

General Election Announced For 08 February
Ireland's next General Election will take place on Saturday, 08 February, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced. The Taoiseach will now go to to Áras an Uachtaráin today to seek a dissolution of the 32nd Dáil from President Michael D Higgins.

Dara Murphy Resigns As Fine Gael TD
Fine Gael's Dara Murphy has resigned from his seat in the Dáil Éireann. In a statement released on Tuesday night, Mr Murphy said he would be taking up a new role in the European Commission. The former Cork North Central TD also informed the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Tuesday evening.
