Conference To Meet Over Rise In International Adoption
Health professionals are to attend a conference on the increase of internationally adopted children coming to Ireland next week.
Organisers of the conference, which is taking place in Cork, said that over the last few years an increasing number of internationally adopted children were coming into hospital and social services with "an array of emotional and behavioural difficulties".
"Our experience is that families have found their children do not respond to the usual interventions used with non-internationally adopted children of comparable age."
The objective of the conference is organising to share experiences and information between professionals and parents regarding children and adolescents who have been adopted from abroad.
"Our view is that the complex difficulties experienced by this group have only come to the attention of professionals in recent years."
Speakers at the conference, who are foremost in their field, will address such complex issues as attachment disorders, effects of institutionalisation and foetal alcohol syndrome.
The organisers said they hoped to establish a common recognition of the issues and to begin to work towards developing methods of assisting internationally adopted children/adolescents and their families.

Adopted Children 'Should Have Citizenship Right'
Foreign children adopted by Irish parents living abroad should still be entitled to Irish citizenship, a report by the Law Reform Commission has recommended. The commission's report, entitled 'Aspects of Intercountry Adoption Law', said that non-Irish national children should have the same rights as any other child of Irish parents.

New dads must take advantage of the government's new paid paternity leave in order for the scheme to work, Fine Gael Senator for Dublin Rathdown, Neale Richmond, has said. "The Paternity Bill will be formally introduced to the Dáil this coming Friday and I look forward to it coming to the Seanad," Deputy Richmond said.

Govt Urged To Ensure Tusla Funding
The government has been urged to ensure Tusla is adequately resourced so that it is able to fully implement the newly published Adoption (Information and Tracing) Bill. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children, Robert Troy, said that further consideration is also needed regarding some proposed exemptions contained in the Bill.
