Laundering Crackdown Across Three Counties

A crackdown on laundered fuel has led to the closure of two petrol stations and the seizure of 160,000 litres of fuel as well as a sum of cash.

Armed Gardai officers and Revenue Custom’s Officers seized a sum totaling €39,000 after yesterday’s raids.

Raids were carried out on 10 filling stations, two private residences and a fuel depot in counties Dublin, Galway and Louth.

The raids were a bid to tackle the growing problem of fuel laundering and shadow economy activity.

Approximately 20,000 litres of fuel were seized in two filling sations in Dublin while 136,000 litres of fuel were apprehended in a fuel depot in Louth and further 19,500 litres were taken from a filling sation in Louth.

Elsewhere €31,000 from a private residence in Louth and €8,000 from a private residence in Galway was detained by Gardai.

A Revenue spokeswoman said the illegal trade in mineral oils, and oil laundering in particular, represent a serious threat to the Exchequer.

Fuel Laundering Plant 'Decommissioned'
An illicit plant with the capacity to produce more than two million litres of fraudulent diesel a year and evade £1.3m in excise duty per annum has been uncovered by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in Co Down. The laundering unit was targeted by HMRC, accompanied by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Fuel Laundering Operation Hits Water Supplies
Illegal fuel laundering is doing more damage than just costing the Exchequer lost revenue. It emerged yesterday that damage in Co Tyrone, at Aughnacloy Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), was caused by by-products of a suspected fuel laundering operation - where agricultural 'red' diesel is stripped off the colouring and sold on as legitimate fuel.

Two Held Over Fuel Laundering Plant
Two men have been arrested in Monaghan on suspicion of running a fuel laundering plant. Revenue officers and Gardaí raided the operation at commercial premises in Glaslough last night. The two men where arrested at the scene, one aged 33 the other aged 34, both from Northern Ireland.

Mobile Fuel Laundering Operations Uncovered
Revenue officials, with the support of armed officers from the Regional Support Unit and local gardaí have uncovered two mobile diesel-laundering operations in Co Louth. Coordinated raids were carried out on two facilities in Co Louth.
