Barroso Applauds Ireland's Economic Performance

Following a meeting in Brussels, the President of the European Council has urged Ireland to continue with its "strong" bail-out programme after praising the State’s economic performance.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny met with José Manuel Barroso in Brussels this morning ahead of the summit of EU leaders on Sunday week.

Mr Barroso said there has been good progress in the implementation of Ireland’s bailout programme, but that must continue to get the countries finances back in order.

He also congratulated Mr Kenny on Ireland's recent economic performance and said they both shared ideas of maintaining the "community method" in any future economic governance rules.

Meanwhile speaking after the 45-minute meeting Mr Kenny said that he felt Ireland was "heading in the right direction".

The Taoiseach said he will be hopeful that Ireland can be the first of the programme countries to emerge from the EU/IMF loan plan as confidence in the state is returns.
