'People Are Not Better Off On Welfare', Says Study

A new study has refuted claims that people on social welfare are better off than those who earn their money through employment.

According to the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) people on the dole would see their income jump by up to 50% if they got a job.

A group of experts from the ESRI has said the study refutes the impression that most people are "better off on the dole".

The study claims that non-typical examples of social welfare payments have led to this impression however the data shows that only 3% of those receiving payments would better off without a job.

Researchers found the incomes of eight out of 10 people would jump by more than half if they got employment, while six out of 10 would actually double their income.

This research is one of a number of papers being launched at the ESRI 'Budget Perspectives' Conference.
