French Detectives To Investigate Du Plantier Murder

French Police officers are due to arrive in Ireland today to quiz witnesses over a 15-year-old murder.

Three French detectives are due in Cork to take witness statements from up to 30 people who were originally interviewed during the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder investigation.

In 1996, the filmmaker was bludgeoned to death and her body was discovered at her West Cork home.

Nobody has been convicted of the crime, but French authorities are hoping to extradite Ian Bailey to face charges.

The 54-year-old has always denied any involvement in the death of Ms du Plantier.

Bailey said he is prepared to go all the way to the European court of justice to prevent the extradition

Forensic scientists from Paris will also make the trip to Ireland and will examine some of the evidence gathered by gardaí during the investigation.

The team of detectives is expected to spend between eight to ten days in Cork and will be assisted by gardaí.

The Irish authorities have said there will be no charges in relation to the death of Ms Toscan du Plantier unless new evidence emerges.
