'No Litter' Campaign For Gallagher

One of the six presidential hopefuls has announced that he will not use roadside posters or an election bus during his campaign.

Presidential candidate Sean Gallagher has said his decision is one based on reducing litter and saving money.

The independent candidate submitted his nomination papers at the Department of the Environment today.

The businessman is the only candidate embarking on this innovative campaign route.

"I think what's different about the presidential campaign, in comparison to Dáil elections or even County Council elections, is the fact that there are only seven candidates.

"We have the national press, local radio and the internet.

"There are enough ways to get the message out without littering the countryside."

Labour Presidential candidate Michael D Higgins has said he does not share Mr Gallagher's view that posters are a waste of money.

Mr Higgins said that having been through several campaigns, he knew the importance of the poster.
