Roscommon Hospital Protest Ends

The overnight protest at Roscommon County Hospital over the ending of the 24-hour service at its urgent care centre has ended.

The remaining protesters left the unit shortly before 9am this morning.

Hundreds of protesters were reported to have occupied the former emergency just minutes before the unit ceased its 24-hour service at 8pm last night, with many planning to remain there through the night.

Among the protesters were nurses who had completed the last overnight shift at the unit and former patients.

The centre will now only be open from 8am to 8pm to treat patients with non-emergency conditions, with emergency cases being transferred to other hospitals in the region for treatment.
