€100m Mayo Generating Station Planned

Main contractor John Sisk and Son Limited has been appointed to undertake construction on a new nominal 50 megawatt electricity generating chp station, combusting biomass material (wood & herbaceous) as well as a small proportion of fuel oil for boiler start-up. The development, located in Killala in Mayo will incorporate: turbine house, boiler house, main boiler stack, drying shed, dryer vent stack, three cooling towers, transformers, wood storage shed, two wood chip silos, wood chip conveyors with associated magnetic separators, enclosed wood chipper, ash silo, two log sampling buildings, start-up boiler, oil storage tanks, oil pumps, precipitator, electrical annex, switchroom, supply air fan motor, sorbent silo, water treatment & associated silos.

The scheme will also include fire fighting water storage tank, switch room, staff amenities building, workshop and administration building, visitors building, car park, hgv parking, garage, bunded silos for storage of oil, caustic and acid tanks, sodium hypochlorite tank, sulphuric acid tank and three security huts.

Construction work is envisaged to commence in Q4 2011. The station will measure 21,129 sq.m. and the total site area is 21 hectares of which approximately 7 hectares will be developed.

A full design team has been engaged.

The project is expected to create 200 jobs during the construction phase and close to 100 jobs upon completion.

Still Over 100,000 Unregistered Septic Tanks
Some 290,000 sceptic tanks owners have so far registered with their local authority, leaving at least 110,000 who have yet to come forward. Secretary General of the Department of the Environment Geraldine Tallon could not say how many people had registered before the end of September to avail of the reduced fee of €5.

Body Discovered In Search For Missing Man
A body has been discovered in Co Wicklow by garda investigating the disappearance of Philip O'Toole. The 33-year-old father-of-one has been missing for more than two weeks. He was last seen on January 7 when he left his house in Arklow, his car was later found on Dargle Road in Bray. A body was discovered just before 11.
