Transplant Failure Blamed On Miscommunication
An Irish probe into a mis-managed bid for a vital organ transplant has focused on the Emergency Medical Support Services (EMSS) involved in the failure to transport a liver transplant patient on Saturday.
The company have said they were not told the full details about the donated organ and the patient.
Failure to transport 14-year-old Maedhbh McGivern from Leitrim to London in time for the operation meant she missed out on the chance of a liver transplant.
The Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly has been in contact with the Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA) who have now co-ordinated an inquiry into the lost opportunity of a liver transplant due to a failure in transportation facilities.
The Minister has expressed his deep concerns and passed his sympathy to a family over the traumatic events that have led to a lost opportunity for a life-saving organ transplant.
Minister Reilly has told the McGivern family that the purpose of the HIQA inquiry is to ensure that their family and others in a similar predicament do not face such a heartbreaking outcome in future.
In a statement the EMSS said: "At no point was there a mention of the flying time of four hours to London Heathrow not to mention two refuelling stops."

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader and spokesperson on public expenditure Mary Lou McDonald has said that HSE plans to withdraw medical cards from some 40,000 people is "yet another vicious attack on those on low incomes". HSE Talks Resume As Resolution Still Not Found
No resolution had been reached by the end of talks between health service managers and consultants at the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) last night. It is understood the negotiations, which centre on implementing work practice reforms, went on until Midnight and will resume later today.
