Ryanair Profits Rise To €401m
Ryanair has today announced a 26% increase in their annual profits to €401m.
Announcing the results Ryanair’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael O’Leary, said: “The highlights of the past successful year for Ryanair include: 40 new aircraft; 8 new bases in El Prat, Gran Canaria, Kaunas, Lanzarote, Malta, Seville, Tenerife, Valencia; 328 new routes; a dividend of €500m; and traffic also grew 8% to 72m.”
Despite higher oil prices, the global recession, and volcanic ash disruptions in the first quarter of last year, Ryanair delivered a 26% increase in profits and 8% traffic growth.
In 2010, following a 27% hike in fees, Dublin airport traffic fell by 3m passengers to just over 18m, a fall of 30% from its 2007 peak of 24.5m. Dublin’s traffic continued to decline in 2011.
Ryanair said unless the new Government introduces new reforms then traffic at the DAA airports will continue to fall, leading to further tourism and job losses in the Irish economy. They welcome the Government’s recent decision to scrap the tourist tax as a step in the right direction, but unless accompanied by competitive airport charges, traffic growth will not return at the Government owned, high cost, Irish airports.

Talks Aim To Resolve Air Traffic Control Dispute
Fresh talks to resolve a dispute between air traffic controllers and the Irish Aviation Authority are due to recommence today. The two sides, which met for talks at the Labour Relations Commission last week, will be holding face-to-face discussions over the coming days in an effort to resolve the dispute by Friday.

Bridge Fails To Navigate Troubled Water
Bad weather has held back plans to bring the Samuel Beckett Bridge on the latest stage of its journey. The advanced Bridge, which will span the Liffey will now be delayed after an abandoned attempt to ferry the Bridge to its mount at 2am this morning because of high winds. A fresh attempt will be made at high tide tomorrow morning.

Samuel Beckett Bridge Arrives In Dublin
The River Liffey's new bridge is to arrive in Dublin Port after its week-long journey from the Netherlands. The new bridge, which is due to be operational next year will link from Guild Street on the north quays to Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south.

New Traffic Restrictions Come Into Force
New traffic restrictions come into force today leading the way for the new Smart Travel plan, which prioritises service for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists. The first measure to be introduced is a ban on right-hand turns from Custom House Quay to Talbot Memorial Bridge.

New Rules From Next Summer For New Drivers
From next summer learners and newly qualified drivers will be put off the road if they clock up just six penalty points. One of a number of new rules regarding new drivers the government has decided to halve the number of points a learner driver can rack up before they are banned for six months.
