Bailey To Appeal Extradition

Ian Bailey is to bring a Supreme Court challenge against his extradition to France for questioning over the murder of a film-maker.

The former journalist is wanted for questioning by French detectives over the 1996 murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, 39.

She was found dead outside her holiday home at Toormore, west Cork, in December 1996.

Mr Bailey was arrested twice in connection with the murder but was never charged. He denies any involvement in the killing.

Detectives were present in the High Court in Dublin today to arrest Mr Bailey had he not been granted a certificate to bring his appeal to the Supreme Court.

Mr Bailey's lawyers argued that the High Court decision to extradite him raised questions of exceptional public importance and set a precedent which could affect every Irish citizen.

The order has been put on hold pending the outcome of the Supreme Court appeal, which must be lodged by next Friday.
