Final Seats Awarded In Election 2011

The 11th hour recount in Galway West has concluded, drawing the 2011 elections to an end.

Éamon Ó Cuív of Fianna Fáil, Derek Nolan of Labour, Brian Walsh and Seán Kyne of Fine Gael and Independent Noel Grealish are now confirmed as representatives for Galway West.

Mr Kyne was the last member to be elected, becoming the 165th TD shortly after 8am on Wednesday morning. The announcement had been delayed by a 90 hour recount, the last of which had been called by independent candidate Catherine Connolly, who was separated from Seán Kyne by just 17 votes.

The conclusion of the count means the 31st Dáil sees Fine Gael with a final 76 seats; Labour with 37; Fianna Fáil on 20; Independents hold 15 seats; Sinn Féin have 14, and Others have 4. The Green Party lost every seats they held in the last Dáil.

Returning Officer, Marian Chambers Higgins announced in the earlyhours of Wednesday morning that a number of errors had been found, meaning a slight change in the quota.

Count staff were forced to amend a number of the results.

In other election news, Fine Gael's Simon Harris was elected in his constituency of Wicklow overnight on Tuesday. At 24 years of age, he will be the youngest TD in the 31st Dáil.

Newly elected Dún Laoghaire TD, Richard Boyd Barrett of People Before Profit, said Labour has no right to go into government with a party that will seek cuts and more austerity.

He also said that he did not accept the notion that Ireland has to answer to the IMF and the country has options.
