A woman in Dublin has been killed by a tree felled during yesterday's high winds.

The woman died after she was struck by the falling tree while walking on Waterloo Road in the Capital. The accident happened shortly after 5pm. The woman was taken to St Vincent's Hospital but was she pronounced dead on arrival.

The 45-year-old Dublin woman was struck while walking to her home in Ballsbridge shortly after 5pm last night. A large section of the tree snapped off in gusts of over 100km per hour outside the International School of Dublin. According to reports this morning, the woman heard the tree snap and fled to the opposite side of the street. The tree collapsed with force on to the retreating woman, pinning her unconscious underneath.

The Dublin Fire Brigade were called and managed to lift the tree off the woman, before paramedics arrived and attempted to resuscitate the woman. However, she died shortly after arriving at St Vincent's Hospital, gardai confirmed last night.

A car travelling along the same road was also struck by the same falling tree, but the driver managed to avoid injury, although the car's bonnet was badly damaged and remained wedged underneath the tree as gardai investigated the accident site.

Gardaí closed a section of the road between Baggot Street and the N11/Leeson Street for a number of hours after the incident.
