Dubliners Urged To Conserve Water

Dublin City Council is urging residents to conserve water as the threat of a shortage looms.

In a statement from the council over the weekend, residents have been told that due to a "huge increase" in demand for water, all areas will have their supply restricted over the weekend.

The position was due to be reviewed this morning, but a spokesman for Dublin City Council said this morning that most of the capital would be affected by the restrictions during this week.

Last week, the four Dublin local authorities began to implement night-time water restrictions, cutting the supply to houses between 7pm and 7am by reducing water pressure, and this is set to continue.

The council said it was appealing to consumers in the Dublin Region to reduce their water consumption and in particular, people are asked not to leave taps running.

A spokesman said: "Customers should note that it will take time for the water to make its way through the pipe network while the system ‘recharges’. There is no need for people to fill baths or store large quantities of water – water tanks in every home or business will have sufficient quantity to cover the amount of water needed when water will be restricted."

Details of the restrictions and areas affected are available on www.dublincity.ie.

The Council also warned residents to remain vigilant during the restrictions as bogus callers may use the current water problems to gain access to houses.

The council said: "If a member of Dublin City Council calls to a property they will always carry and produce identification. If the caller asks you to check the flow of water at the taps, close the door fully while you do so. If you are in any doubt do not allow access."
