Arrested Business Man Taken To Hospital

A businessman who is being held over alleged offences of corruption, has been admitted into hospital.

Jim Kennedy, who was being questioned about alleged offences under a number of acts concerned with the payment of bribes to public officials, complained to Gardaí of chest pains while being held at Irishtown Garda Station in the early hours of this morning.

He was taken to St Vincent's University Hospital at Elm Park at around 4am, where he was undergoing tests.

Fraud detectives have suspended his arrest period and will resume questioning Mr Kennedy when he is released from hospital.

The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) are currently investigating the 63-year-old businessman's alleged involvement with Jackson Way Properties. The company owned 17 acres of land at Carrickmines that was rezoned for development in 1997.

Mr Kennedy, who has been living in the Isle of Man and Gibraltar for a number of years, had refused to attend the Mahon Tribunal into corruption, and reportedly refused any interviews with gardaí.

The CAB said it was believed corrupt payments to county councillors secured the rezoning from agricultural to industrial use. Former government press secretary Frank Dunlop, who was jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to corruption, was accused of brokering the deal.
