Martin Attends EU Summit

Foreign Minister Micheál Martin is in Brussels today for a two-day meeting with his EU counterparts.

Hosted by the Belgian Presidency, the so-called 'Gymnich' meeting of foreign ministers will offer a valuable opportunity for informal exchanges on a range of key current issues.

Top of the agenda for this meeting will be the EU's own relations with its strategic partners.

Discussions will focus in particular on relations with China, but Ministers are also expected to discuss EU engagement with India and Brazil.

The humanitarian crisis in Pakistan will also be a key discussion point for Ministers, as will the EU's cooperation with Turkey on foreign policy issues.

There will also be an opportunity for discussions between ministers and their counterparts from the EU candidate countries: the Foreign Ministers of Turkey, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and, for the first time, Iceland will be present.

This meeting will prepare a discussion of the key strategic partnerships at the European Council in Brussels on 16 September.
