Arrests Over Dublin Taxi Assault

Gardaí made five arrests today following an attack on a taxi driver in Dublin city centre early this morning.

A taxi was hailed in Ballybrack, Co Dublin, by two men who asked to be taken to Amiens Street.

The passengers attacked the driver when the vehicle was at the IFSC at about 1.35am and drove off in the vehicle.

Gardaí were alerted, and the taxi driver, who was said to be in a very distressed state, was taken to the Mater hospital with minor injuries.

In a follow-up operation, the taxi was later stopped by gardaí in Finglas, and five people were arrested - a 16 and 17-year-old, two 18-year-olds, and a 21-year-old. All five were were detained at Finglas Garda station and have since been released.

The two 18-year-olds and 21-year-old are due in Blanchardstown court on October 8th, charged in connection with the investigation, which is being conducted by gardaí in Store Street. Two of those due in court are charged with unauthorised taking of a vehicle, while the third is charged with hijacking a vehicle.

Renewed Appeal Over Murder Of Taxi Driver
Gardaí have renewed an appeal for information on the murder of taxi driver Martin Mulligan. Mr Mulligan (53) was stabbed to death on 28 September following an altercation in Dundalk in Co Louth. It is believed the altercation began over an unpaid taxi fare.

Taxi Drivers March On Transport Department
A group representing Ireland's private taxi drivers is to stage a protest in Dublin today, it has been revealed. An Garda Siochana said they understood a protest would take place by the group who are calling themselves “The Irish Taxi Council” this afternoon. According to Irishtaxi.

Five Years For Woman Who Robbed Taxi With Sringe
A woman has been sentenced to five years in jail for robbing a taxi driver while threatening him with a syringe. The robbery occurred after the driver turned down her sexual advances. 30-year-old Mary Ward had propositioned the taxi driver, quoting him prices for various sexual acts. However when he declined it quickly became a robbery.
