Off-Duty Garda Foils Armed Post Office Raid

An off-duty Garda has dramatically foiled an armed raid on a post office in Ballsbridge in Dublin.

At around 2.30pm yesterday, a man armed with a sawn-off shotgun entered the post-office on Shelbourne Road demanding money. He left with a sum of cash but was spotted by a passing off-duty garda who was cycling past the incident.

According to reports this morning, the unarmed Garda leapt from his bike and tackled the armed robber, retrieving both the weapon and the cash to a value of an estimated €8,000.

A patrol car arrived at the scene and the man was arrested.

The 41-year-old is now being detained at Donnybrook Garda Station. No one was injured in the incident.

Meanwhile yesterday, a 26-year-old Dublin man received a sentence of ten years in prison over his role in an attempted raid on a cash-in-transit van that resulted in the death of his accomplice.

Keith Murtagh of Mariners Port, Sheriff Street Lower in Dublin, had previously pleaded guilty at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempted robbery and possession of a weapon with intent to endanger life at Foxborough Road in Lucan on 15 May 2009. During the attempted robbery, armed gardaí who had been monitoring the men before they held-up the van, shot dead 27-year-old Garrett Molloy.

Judge Katherine Delahunt sentenced Murtagh to eight years in jail for the possession of a firearm conviction and a further ten years for the attempted robbery conviction.
