Terror Focus For North's Police

The PSNI are set to 'swamp' the North's streets in a bid to prevent attacks by dissident republicans in the run-up to the UK General Election, a member of the NI Policing Board has revealed.

The revelation from UUP MLA Basil McCrea comes after members of the Board received a detailed briefing from PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott on the current security situation following the bomb in the border town of Newtownhamilton last Thursday night.

The top officer updated members on the police response to the bomb attack on and the measures the PSNI have put in place to deal with the security threat.

Members said they were encouraged by re-assured that the PSNI are taking a measured and responsible approach to dealing with the current terrorist threat.

The Northern Ireland Policing Board is to meet to discuss the findings of what is thought to be a damning independent report on its performance - with it even being suggested that is could be "obsolete". Co Armagh Cops 'Under Fire'
The PSNI continues to be the target of attacks by republicans in the North with explosives and a petrol bomb thrown at police in Craigavon this week. Officers were conducting enquiries in the Meadowbrook area of the town at about at about 12.30pm on Tuesday when they were attacked.

North's Police Detail Trip-Wire Bomb
A group of young people who were in two cars may hold vital information about a booby-trap bomb attempt to murder or maim PSNI officers in south Belfast. The teenagers are know to have stopped near a park where the bomb had been planted by terrorist trying to kill police officers at Annadale Embankment on Monday night.

Bomb 'Attempt To Derail Peace': Baggott
A bomb explosion in Belfast at the weekend has threatened to explode hopes that policing powers will soon be devolved to the local Assembly.
