O'Mahony Pays Tribute After Footballer's Shock Death
Fine Gael Sports Spokesman, John O'Mahony, has paid tribute to Leitrim footballer Philly McGuinness who tragically died last night.
Philip 'Philly' McGuinness, aged 26, who played football and hurling for his county, died two days after receiving a bang to the head during a club game.
Mr McGuinness, a mechanical engineer in Belmullet, Co Mayo, collapsed on the pitch, where his brothers Michael and John were also playing, and never regained consciousness.
Mr O'Mahony said 'Philly' personified everything that is good about young people.
"He played inter-county football for a number of years, always with 100% dedication, passion and belief. Philly was a role model for young players.
"As a former Leitrim manager I understand the importance of Gaelic games in the county and Philly's tragic death will come as a hammer blow. However, my thoughts in particular are with his family.
"I know his brothers Michael and John well and the sympathy of everyone involved in sport goes out to them and their family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam," he said.
GAA bosses led tributes to the young inter-county footballer, with GAA president Christy Cooney describing his passing "as untimely as it is tragic". He said: "I extend my deepest sympathies to his immediate family and to the wide circle of friends and players he came into contact with."
A spokesman for the Leitrim GAA board extended the sympathies of all Leitrim's gaels.
A book of condolences has been opened on the Leitrim GAA website.

A young GAA player has collapsed during training and died in a suspected case of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). Ciaran Carr, 20, from Clondalkin, Co Dublin, died as he was training with his local Round Towers GAA Club on Friday evening. He was participating in an indoor circuit training session when he suddenly fell forward and collapsed.

335 New Homecare Jobs To Be Created
Homecare provider, Bluebird Care, have announced that it is to create 335 new jobs across the country. New positions for care assistants and support staff will created over the next six months, the homecare provider said. 175 of the new jobs will be in counties Wicklow, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.
