Nine Charged Over Irish Teen's US Suicide
A Massachusetts court in the USA has charged nine teenagers in connection with the death of a Co Clare schoolgirl in the state earlier this year.
Four girls and two boys face charges including statutory rape, assault and stalking while a further three juveniles are also implicated.
15-year-old Phoebe Prince, who was originally from Fanore in West Clare, took her own life on 14 January after allegedly endured a campaign of bullying on the social networking forum Facebook, via text messages and in the corridors of South Hadley High School.
A number of girls in the school are believed to have turned on Pheobe after she had a brief fling with the school's football star.
The teenager and her family had moved from Fanore in to South Hadley, where they have relatives, last year.
The District Attorney who brought the charges yesterday in South Hadley, Elizabeth Scheibel, described the bullying as "relentless activity" which was designed to humiliate her and to make it impossible for her to remain at school.
“There will be people who believe that no charges should have been brought in this case and others who will believe these charges do not go far enough.’’
She went on to say that: "their conduct far exceeded the limits of normal teenage relationship related quarrels".
