Police 'Industrial Action' Begins
History was being made today as some 11,000 Gardaí were expected to begin a 'work-to-rule'.
This will be the first action of its kind in the history of the force.
The so-called 'withdrawal of goodwill' is in protest over public sector pay cuts and the pension levy.
The Garda Representative Association (GRA) has said its members will refuse to use their own mobile phones, laptops and cameras in the course of their professional duties.
Last December, the GRA agreed to survey its members on protesting about the reduction in their pay rather than hold a trade union-style ballot for industrial action.
Representatives of the GRA will attend discussions on pay which resume today under the chairmanship of faciliatator Kieran Mulvey of the Labour Relations Commission.
The GRA had announced on December 7th its plans to hold the ballot, a move seen as highly controversial because gardaí take an oath of loyalty to the State and are banned from striking.
Gardaí are also banned from joining a trade union and the GRA was not directly involved in recent talks on public sector savings.
Under the Garda Siochána Act 2005 it is a criminal offence for a member of the force to withdraw their labour or to induce anybody to withdraw their labour.

Garda Bodies Again Urged To Return To Talks
The Taoiseach has again urged garda representative bodies to return to talks on extending the Croke Park Agreement, saying the place to deal with the issues under discussion was at the negotiations. Time For Govt To Act On Gender Pay Gap
Marking EU Equal Pay Day 2018, Labour has said that it is time for the Government to act on the Gender Pay Gap in Ireland. Last month, the Seanad passed all stages of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (Gender Pay Gap) Information Bill 2017, a Private Members Bill initiated by the Labour group in the Seanad.

Ibec Slams Proposals By The Low Pay Commission
Ibec has slammed plans by the Low Pay Commission for a 50c increase in the national minimum wage. The group, which represents Irish business, said the case is at odds with all the economic evidence. It also said the increase would heap pressure on companies still struggling to stay in business.

Garda To 'Turn Off The Goodwill Tap'
Gardaí will cease to carry out certain tasks, which the do on a voluntary basis, from 22 February, the Garda Representative Association (GRA) has confirmed. Local representatives and members will be briefed on the tasks that will fall under the directive, in action GRA’s John Parker described as "turning off the goodwill tap".

Translink Workers Reject Pay Offer
Translink NI workers have rejected a pay offer from the public transport company. Unite, GMB and SIPTU confirmed that their members has "decisively voted to reject as inadequate" a pay offer made by Translink management. Workers were offered a 5% pay increase and a non-consolidated one-off payment of £1,500 for the 2023-2024 financial year.
