Cowen Urges Obama To Visit Ireland

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has attended the traditional St Patrick's Day celebrations in the White House.

The Taoiseach also held a bilateral meeting with President Barack Obama and then, along with the President he travelled to Capitol Hill for the traditional St Patrick's Day lunch hosted by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

The White House fountains were flowing green for Mr Cowen's 40 minute meeting with President Obama.

During their discussions in the Oval office the President said America has been shaped culturally, economically, and politically by the contribution of Irish Americans.

Last night, the President and First Lady, Michelle Obama hosted a White House Reception in honour of the Taoiseach and Mary Cowen at which the Irish leader called on the US leader to visit Ireland at the earliest opportunity.

Earlier, in the first engagement of the day, the Taoiseach and Mary Cowen joined Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr Jill Biden for a special St Patrick's Day breakfast at the Vice President's official residence.

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen will escape financial woes for at least part of one day next month as he helps the world's most powerful man celebrate the Irish saint's day in the USA. Beleaguered Cowen is to continue a long-standing tradition when he presents a bowl of Irish shamrock to US President Barack Obama on St Patrick's Day.

Higgins To Be Ninth President?
