Mobile Phone Company Cuts Off 50 Jobs

Mobile phone provider O2 has announced around 50 jobs are to go as part of a cost cutting plan.

Employees at the company's offices in Dublin and Limerick were told about the planned job losses in meetings with management today.

The company said the redundancies will be compulsory and are as a result of a "review of structures".

The company employs 1,300 people in Ireland and the company says the redundancies will be in all areas, except retail and customer care.

It will now enter into a process of consultation with staff but expects the redundancies to take effect from late March or early April.

Meanwhile, staff at a nightclub in Sligo have voted in favour of strike action. Workers at Envy Nightclub will take to the picket lines for three days during Sligo IT's rag week.

They claim they are not being paid properly for working Sundays and Bank Holdiays.

However, in some positive news for the job market, Hertz Car Hire has announced 100 new jobs at the companies European Shared Services Centre in Swords, Co Dublin.

The new jobs arise as Hertz expands its international operations in Ireland.

The company already employs 830 people in Swords and the new positions will be filled over the coming 12 months.
